I wanted a first rate cooker and I know from experience that Zojirushi makes some world class rice cookers. The Zojirushi Magnetic Induction Rice Cooker was a new thing I hadn’t seen before but I knew that I would be getting a high quality product because it is a Zojirushi and 100% engineered and manufactured in Japan. And the "magnetic induction" turns out to be an added bonus that has some benefits over traditional heating coil based cookers.

There is no heating coil in this cooker. Instead, a magnetic field is cycled on and off causing the rice pot to heat up perfectly evenly. The amazing thing is that the expected layer of browned crusty rice always found at the bottom of other cookers is totally absent. Every single grain of rice is perfectly cooked. Even if you only want to cook a small amount of rice, this cooker handles it easily without any burned or wasted grains.

This thing has also been wonderful at cooking every type of rice I have tossed in it. It cooks brown rice excellent, and I've cooked aromatic Indian basimati rice, wild rice, Asian white rice, and wild rice medleys. Every time the rice has cooked perfectly.

Clean-up is a breeze as well. Zojirushi has really thought out every detail in their cookers. The pan lifts up and out with two cool touch plastic handles; no need to wear oven mitts. A little water, one swipe, a rinse, and it's ready for action.

I thought Zojirushi were a little expensive, but there is no comparison that comes close to the quality of the Zojirushi NH-VBC18. Here’s how it compares with my old $30 rice cooker:

1 cup of rice can be cooked here if you need it. There is no burned, congealed bottom layer, even with one cup. The cheap rice cooker had a crusty layer and required soaking and scrubbing.

No turning off before done. The cheap cooker would switch off the rice didn’t cook evenly and if it turned off too early you might as well throw out the rice and start over.

Well designed warming feature: The cheap cooker always had a crusty layer at the bottom. The Zojirushi, will reheat the rice perfectly even after sitting for a day.

An easy clean bowl. The cheap cooker required washing the lid, the area around it, and the bowl. The Zojirushi nonstick bowl is a breeze to clean.

The timer function is very useful, I can set up my rice to be done when I know I’ll want it. The cheap cooker doesn’t have this feature.

Has settings to cook all kinds of rice perfectly. The bowl is marked for a variety of rice so measuring rice is easy. With the cheap cooker, white rice is easy to cook, but you have to start guessing when it comes to other varieties of rice.

The bowl handles are cool to the touch. The cheap cooker required oven mitts to lift and was very heavy.

And the cons? If the Zojirushi vbc18 was shaped like something other than a molar and a choice of finishes would be nice. But, once you start using it, these cons fade into the background because it's so good at what it does.

Review:

The Zojirushi induction rice cooker could not be easier to use. From the quiet operation to the ease of cleaning, it is obvious that quality materials and lots of refinements have gone into Zojirushi rice cookers. 

I was expecting the Zojirushi to cook perfect rice based on my previous Zojirushi neuro fuzzy logic rice cooker, which finally gave out after many years of reliable use. I'm very surprised with the induction heating system,  it cooks my brown rice better. 

The Zojirushi has a great warming function, which keeps rice warm for up to 12 hours on normal warm mode or up to 48 hours in extended mode. I tried out the warming function and after about 8 hours the rice was just as good as when it had been first cooked. 

We use the Zojirushi at high elevations (over 7000 feet) and even though the manual suggests that the cooker may not work well at altitudes over 3000 feet, we have had perfect rice time after time. 

All in all, this is a superb product and we love the timer that lets us set our rice to be ready when we get home from work. I like to purchase the best quality equipment I can so as to avoid the hassle of poor quality or under powered tools. The Zojirushi has proven to be one of the best values we have ever invested in.

Battery backup keeps the last settings used on the cooker after it is unplugged. If you cook the same type of rice regularly, this is a handy feature.

Clock timer with 2 time settings you can set to have rice ready and waiting.

Con's

Water level marks in pan are based on using the cup provided to add rice.

Cooking time is longer than stovetop method.

You have to be familiar with military time to be able to read the timer.

In summary, the Zojirushi induction rice cooker fits me perfectly, so I give it 5 stars. I also recommend the Zojirushi lunch jar system if like to take to work.

Review:

This rice cooker is a dream. The Zojirushi is everything we hoped for in a rice cooker and more. We wanted a rice cooker that can cook perfect rice, can handle smaller amounts of rice, had a timer, and can handle a variety of different types of rice.

This thing is beautiful; it has a small footprint so it doesn’t take up a lot of valuable counter top space. It is easy to clean inside and out. It does a great job on different varieties of rice. There are different settings for each type of rice and the measurement markings appear correct for different rice types. I’ve yet to have a bad batch of rice. I’ve cooked sushi rice, basmati, brown & wild medley, types of dal, mujadarah, medium grain brown, long grain brown, jasmine, sushi, brown basmati, white basmati, and brown/white mixes. 

The cooker’s high tech fuzzy logic algorithm is continually adjusting the temperature so the rice cooks evenly and comes out perfect every time. The continual temperature adjustment also includes even heat distribution across the heavy bowl that prevents scorched rice.

It has a great timer that is convenient for having your rice cooked by a certain time. The rice cooking completes at your specific time and then switches to keep your rice warm. So it is great to set it up for breakfast or dinner. 

There are several well thought out features. There is a retractable cord that is a cool feature. And a holder for the included rice paddle that hangs on the side of the cooker.

I'd highly recommend this rice cooker. It's probably not big enough for a big family but for a single person, a couple, or a small family it will probably fit the bill perfectly. And if you do need a bigger Zojirushi Fuzzy Logic Rice Cooker there are 5.5 and 10 cup models. If you love your rice, I have high praise for the quality of rice the cooker produces, it's like having restaurant quality rice at home. Once you switch to Zojirushi you won’t use any other rice cooker.

Review:

Speaking as a professional cook and whose has been cooking rice on the stove top forever, I blew it off when a guest at a dinner party asked why we didn't have a rice cooker. But my husband started researching rice cookers and he read every review of the Zojirushi 5 cup rice cooker as well as the entire Zojirushi website. I complained about throwing away money on a rice cooker, but he convinced me to get the Zojirushi fuzzy logic rice cooker. This rice cooker is awesome and I can’t believe that it actually makes the rice taste better.

We’ve had 3 of the Zojirushi 5 cup rice cookers over the years and they make the best rice we have ever had, including the rice we had during our travels to Southeast Asia. And despite the space age looking face panels, the Zojirushi 5 cup rice cookers are remarkably simple to operate.

We cook plenty of brown rice, which is difficult for some rice cookers to cook well. The Zojirushis have a setting for white rice, brown rice, jasmine rice, sweet sticky rice and cooks it to perfection. There are settings to pick how soft or hard you want your rice and a handy timer that lets you program when you want your rice ready to eat. There is even a quick cooking cycle that shaves about 20 minutes off the cooking time. The pot is easy to clean and the inner lid pops off for easy cleaning as well. 

We have expanded our use of the Zojirushi 5 cup rice cooker. We have started using it to produce porridge and soup. It’s great for cooking grain soups, porridge, oatmeal and Thai flavored rice. We dump the ingredients and rice in and hit go. The timer is great because we can put everything in the night before, set the timer and is ready when we get home from work.

The one drawback I found is the measuring cup. Their idea of a cup is 6 oz. while my idea of a cup is 8 oz. So the Zojirushi 5 cup rice cookers are really 4 cup rice cookers. So if you are a big rice eater family, you may want to upgrade to one of the Zojirushi 10 cup rice cookers.

After 6 months of research and convincing I agreed to buy a Zojirushi 5 cup rice cooker. I wish my husband was more convincing and we hadn’t waited so long. I am definitely glad we chose Zojirushi rice cookers.

Updates:
After 6 years and continuous daily use it is still going strong. The "Brown Rice" setting finally died after nearly five years of use. We have gotten so much out of our Zojirushi 5 cup rice cooker that we plan to upgrade to the newest model in a 10 cup capacity.

Some observations -
Similar to coffee makers, the capacity refers to 6 oz cups. However, for best results, Zojirushi recommends using no more than 4 - 6 oz cups of dry rice. So this machine easily feeds 4 adults. But, if you need more for parties or you just like having leftovers, you will want to upgrade to the 10 cup Zojirushi rice.
